On 15th October, 2024, the RESPONDENT consortium was proud to have achieved a major milestone of the project by holding its first pilot demonstration in Athens, Greece.

The event, organised by consortium partner Greenesco Energy SA and attended by stakeholders from across Europe both online and in-person, showcased RESPONDENT’s ground-breaking use of European space technologies to predict renewable energy sources (RES) power generation, marking a critical milestone in the project’s journey towards enhancing renewable energy integration and supporting Europe’s clean energy transition.

The live demonstration, performed and operated by FINT employee Andreas Tsarouchas, was a complete success, with attendees able to witness the smooth operation of RESPONDENT’s innovative AI/ML algorithms that leverage the Copernicus EO Climate and Atmosphere Monitoring service (CAMS) for RES power generation forecasting. Providing valuable real-world data and insights, the demonstration was confirmation of the system’s efficiency and reliability, as well as the module’s ease of operation.

Attendees of the demonstration were able to witness validated predictions for local weather conditions and RES power output, solidifying RESPONDENT’s role in driving advancements for Europe’s energy future.

Project Coordinator Effie Makri reflected on the event’s success, stating, “The pilot demonstration was a defining moment for RESPONDENT. It not only showcased the technology we’ve worked so hard to develop, but also reinforced the immense potential of European space technologies in advancing the EU Green Deal and the amazing potential for securing the EU’s energy independence.”

Following the demonstration, participants visited project partner KIEFER’s impressive solar park for a tour and to see first-hand the source of the data for the previous day’s demonstration. While there, Dimitris Asimakopoulos of KIEFER guided the consortium and our guests around the park, providing them with engaging and insightful information on the day-to-day operations of the park, the function and maintenance of the solar panels, and how they were able to ensure optimal integration of the data into RESPONDENT’s power generation forecasting module for a fruitful demonstration.

Looking ahead, we eagerly anticipate our second pilot demonstration, scheduled for early 2025. Pilot Two will delve into the project’s timing and synchronisation module and its use of simulated PMU data, expanding on the advancements that were achieved in Athens. This event will include a comprehensive demonstration of the full solution, complete with the RESPONDENT dashboard, and will follow the structured approach established in Pilot One to ensure consistency and clear comparability between our pilot phases.

We eagerly anticipate sharing these next steps as we continue progressing towards a more resilient and sustainable energy future for Europe.
