FIND OUT HOW THE FINAL RESPONDENT PILOT DEMONSTRATION IN BARCELONA BROUGHT TOGETHER STAKEHOLDERS FROM ACROSS EUROPE TO WITNESS THE FULL SOLUTION SUITE IN ACTION
On March 28th, 2025, the RESPONDENT project successfully held its second and final pilot demonstration at the facilities of project partner IREC (Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya) in Barcelona, Spain. With this event, the RESPONDENT consortium marked its biggest milestone in the project’s mission to enhance Europe’s energy resilience and security, and to accelerate the clean energy transition using European space-based technologies.
Building on the momentum of the first pilot in October 2024 in Athens, the second demonstration sought to demonstrate and validate RESPONDENT’s innovative tools and solutions by showcasing both power generation and demand forecasting capabilities, alongside cutting-edge Galileo-enabled Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) for real-time grid monitoring and nanosecond-level time synchronisation.
In-person and online participants were able to see first-hand how RESPONDENT’s AI-driven forecasting solutions can help transmission and distribution system operators (TSOs and DSOs), energy traders, and industrial consumers optimise electricity planning, balance supply and demand, while at the same time reducing operational costs. The integration of demand-side management strategies and renewable energy sources demonstrated RESPONDENT’s strong potential to support smarter, more flexible grid operations and to showcase the viability of integrating greater levels of renewable energy sources to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
A key highlight was the demonstration of Galileo-enabled PMUs, with one unit integrated into IREC’s microgrid control system and another installed at a substation of project partner Anell. These devices provided highly accurate, real-time monitoring enabled by Galileo time stamping, offering a European alternative to non-EU satellite systems for grid synchronisation.
With the final pilot, the consortium successfully demonstrated the full power of the RESPONDENT Solution Suite, showcasing improvements in congestion management, voltage control, grid stability, and time-synchronised data accuracy, and helped to solidify RESPONDENT’s position at the forefront of efforts to modernise Europe’s energy infrastructure and ensure a secure, sustainable energy future.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks not only to those who participated in the final pilot demonstration, but also to everyone who has engaged with the RESPONDENT project since its launch in November 2022 — from collaborators and consortium partners to stakeholders, supporters, and followers. Although the project is drawing to a close, the consortium remains available to contact, respond to questions, and share further information with anyone who is interested in the work that we did and the project’s solutions. Our website and social media channels will remain active for at least five years beyond the project’s end, ensuring continued access to our results, resources, and updates.
